From June 2nd to 6th 2025, SYNERGIES took part in the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, a key international event convened to discuss strategies, innovations and partnerships for a safer, more resilient future. Held under the auspices of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), this edition focused on inclusive early warning systems, youth and children’s resilience, and the role of emerging technologies in disaster preparedness.

Representing SYNERGIES, the Resilience Advisors Network (RAN) participated in the event and followed the sessions closely, engaging with discussions that resonate deeply with the project’s core values, particularly around inclusive risk communication, the empowerment of local communities, and user-centred innovation in preparedness systems. The event also provided valuable opportunities to create synergies and collaboration points with other projects, especially around knowledge-sharing and the co-development of training materials.

One of the main topics was the development of people-centered and gender-responsive early warning systems. A hands-on workshop highlighted the urgent need for early warning mechanisms that are not only technologically sound, but also socially inclusive, especially for vulnerable groups, women, and communities often left behind. The launch of the Global Early Warnings for All Multi-Stakeholder Forum marked a significant step toward universal coverage, while also acknowledging the limitations of early warning in addressing slower-onset or systemic risks such as glacial melt.

The sessions reinforced the importance of multi-hazard approaches, collaborative planning, and forward-looking strategies. Key initiatives like the new Hazard Information Profiles, a comprehensive set of 282 risk profiles ranging from wildfires to cyberattacks, provided practical tools to support preparedness and emergency planning worldwide.

Discussions also stressed the importance of linking early warning with early action, echoing the priorities of the Sendai Framework, particularly Priority 4 on enhancing disaster preparedness and “Build Back Better” in recovery phases.

Another major theme was the resilience of children and youth. The event spotlighted the Comprehensive School Safety Framework (CSSF), with the engagement of 36 ministries and organisations working to make schools safer and more prepared for all types of risk. Children and young people were not only recognised as vulnerable groups, but also as active contributors to preparedness and early warning design, thanks to their local knowledge and innovative spirit. An integrated, inclusive model of school safety (combining education, health, protection, and emergency readiness) was widely supported.

A standout contribution came from SYNERGIES partner Save the Children, who presented Feel Safe VR, an immersive virtual reality experience co-developed with the LINKS Foundation (LINKS EU-project). This interactive educational tool, designed for youth aged 12 and up, simulates real-life emergencies like floods, fires and earthquakes, helping users to recognise danger, adopt safe behaviours, and build emotional coping strategies. Developed as a digital evolution of the Feel Safe educational platform, the VR experience is fully inclusive, featuring customisable avatars, accessibility for users with hearing, motor or reading disabilities, and availability in multiple languages (Italian, English, French, with sign language support).

By showcasing experiences like Feel Safe VR and contributing to dialogues on inclusive risk communication and community engagement, SYNERGIES reaffirmed its commitment to advancing equitable, user-centered approaches in disaster risk reduction. Through the participation of our partners, the project also strengthened connections with other key actors and initiatives present at the event, contributing to a broader effort to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to preparedness and resilience.
